Here is the latest news from Transport Scotland
A835 and the Gorstan Junction, Garve (Case Ref: MT18703)
Thank you for your correspondence of 13 January 2026 on behalf of the community in Garve regarding
the Safety of the A835 and the Gorston Junction.
I can confirm that Transport Scotland’s trunk road operating company, BEAR Scotland are undertaking
the collision investigation review of the A835/A832 Gorston junction this current Financial Year
(2025/26). This work is ongoing and is on schedule to be issued from BEAR to Transport Scotland for
review by 31 March 2026.
Following submission of the draft investigation report and proposals, BEAR Scotland will arrange a
meeting with the community council to discuss the findings of the investigation, outline any proposals
and gather any further additional input from the community council to inform consideration of any
potential proposed remedial measures. Transport Scotland has instructed BEAR Scotland to arrange
this meeting by 31 May 2026.
Following this, if there are any proposed remedial measures, the design and implementation of these
will be programmed for implementation as soon as available funding and resources allow in the
2026/27 financial year.
In relation to the request by the community council for additional speed surveys to be undertaken over a
holiday period, I can confirm that BEAR Scotland are arranging for these to be carried out in April 2026
during the easter holidays. As requested, these will be undertaken at the same locations as undertaken
in 2022.
The Scottish Safety Camera Programme is currently trialling the use of connected vehicle data. This
technology enables the monitoring of vehicle speeds at specific times and locations without the need
for roadside equipment or third-party reporting delays.
A review of traffic speed throughout the extent of the 40mph speed limit in Garve was undertaken
for the 2025 summer holiday months from 1 July 2025 to 31 August 2025.
This showed an average speed of between 30mph to 40mph and an 85th percentile speed
(85% of vehicles are travelling at this or below) of between 36mph to 47mph.
This was also reviewed for the more recent period of 1 November 2025 to 13 January 2026. This
revealed an average speed of between 30mph to 40mph and an 85th percentile speed between
38mph to 48mph, in relation to the 40mph speed limit in Garve.
I can confirm that the works mentioned in our letter of 8 May 2025 (reference: 202500463143), which
included a structural maintenance scheme from Riverside Lodge to Killin Farm, a refresh of all the
existing road markings and introduction of 40mph roundel road markings were completed in late 2025.
Additionally, junction bollards were installed to highlight the presence of the cottages and electricity
substation. This is in response to concerns from residents accessing the A835 from their property.
A new Vehicle Activated Sign for vehicles entering Garve northbound is to be installed in the vicinity of
the properties adjacent to the electrical substation at the southern gateway to remind drivers of the
40mh speed limit. This is programmed to be installed alongside any potential proposed measures
arising from the A835/A832 Gorston junction investigation mentioned above.
I hope you find this information helpful.
