Here is a pictorial update on the work currently taking place in and around Strathgarve Mains single-track road.

Despite assurances given to us in November last year that the felling of Coupe 41 by Forest and Land Scotland (FLS), which was sold as a standing crop to haulage company RTS, would not be carried out at the same time as any associated works by SSEN for the proposed Western Isles HVDC Link, this is now exactly what is happening. It should be noted that the HVDC project currently has planning refusals along the route. The forestry operation has consent to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year for upto 8 loads - 16 trips up and down Strathgarve Mains.

We have already had to make a formal complaint to RTS about the speed of the lorries using the route. We had previously been told they would not exceed 10MPH and would use deflated tyres to spread the load and lessen detrimental impact to the road. The MD has assured us they will speak to all drivers. Unfortunately that was too late for one resident and dog that had to leap out of the way for a fully laden lorry earlier this week.

In addition, tree felling and thinning works are scheduled to take place round Wyvis Play Park for four days next week.

New passing places have been created along the Strathgarve Mains. However, these have yet to receive their final tarmac surface and are already showing signs of wear and damage. Road verges have also been affected where vehicles have been unable to remain fully on the carriageway. We have been advised that the passing places will not receive their final tarmac surface until all works have been completed.

Passing place signage has yet to be installed, resulting in some motorists already parking in these areas and leaving their vehicles unattended.

The area should be avoid by anyone for leisure activities for the foreseeable future - we will keep you updated.
